LTL Carriers will generally charge for freight based on the weight and cube of the shipped items. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association publishes the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC) to assist with this. This standard allows determining freight classes to compare different commodities and shipped products. Every shipped item falls into one of 18 freight classes, represented by numeric numbers ranging from class 50 to 500. Using a Freight Class Calculator to determine your class is essential to ensuring your rate isn’t good
There are four different aspects or characteristics that determine any given commodities freight class. A commodity’s class determines density, stowability, handling, and liability.
Density
Density is the primary key in determining freight class. The density is the pounds per cubic foot of your item. Typically, lower freight classes represent items of higher density and, therefore, a lower cost.
Stowability
Stowability takes into account how easy it is to stow the commodity. Some factors include if it is unusual dimensions or if it contains hazardous materials. Additionally, some items are regulated by government or carrier policies and entities with characteristics that prevent them from being near or shipped with other things. The harder it is to stow or transport this item compared to other commodities, the more this factor will increase the freight class and cost.
Handling
This considers the commodity’s ability to be handled as the freight is loaded and unloaded from the LTL terminal to the LTL terminal. Packaging, unit dimensions, and fragility are considered when determining how handling impacts the class. The greater the difficulty in handling, the more this factor will increase the freight class and cost.
Liability
This considers how likely the item will be damaged, stolen, or damaged to other freight and property. The greater the liability risk, the more this factor will increase the freight class and the cost.
Freight class is an LTL freight industry system for distinguishing goods to determine accurate pricing. Calculate the correct freight class for your LTL freight with our free freight class calculator. The National Motor Freight Association, also known as the NMFTA, created the freight classification system to standardize freight pricing for different types of commodities shipped by truck. The freight class is determined mainly by the density of your freight load, measured in pounds per cubic foot pr PPCF.

Freight Class Calculator FAQ
Q. How do I calculate shipping class?
A. To calculate shipping class, use a freight class calculator. Enter details like weight and dimensions. Based on these factors, the calculator will determine the shipping class, ensuring accurate pricing and appropriate handling during transit.
Q. What is freight class 70?
A. Freight class 70 typically includes lighter items, such as food products or car parts, with a density of around 15 to 22.5 pounds per cubic foot. This class is determined based on weight, dimensions, value, and density, ensuring efficient and cost-effective shipping.
Q. What freight class do I need?
A. The freight class you need depends on the type, weight, and dimensions of your shipment. Use a freight class chart to determine the specific class, which ranges from 50 to 500. Key factors include stowability, liability, handling, and density. For accurate classification, refer to an official freight class chart or consult with your 3PL.
Q. How do you determine freight weight class?
A. To determine freight weight class:
- Divide the shipment’s total weight by its cubic feet to get the density.
- For multiple items, sum their weights first.
- Use an LTL freight class chart based on the density to find the correct class.
