Pickleball

Over the last few years, Pickleball has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing sports in America, with millions of people across the country picking up the game. People of all skill levels and abilities play the sport. Known for its accessibility, simplicity, and appeal to all age groups and abilities, the sport is here to stay!

Pickleball is played with a plastic ball, paddles, and a net. Paddles are made with wood, composite materials, or a combination.

There are over 60 members in the International Pickleball Federation, with nations worldwide joining every month. As a growing sport, there are more and more courts and clubs dedicated to Pickleball. More and more communities are embracing the sport, with many forming tournaments and organized leagues.

Pickleball History

In Bainbridge Island, Washington, Joel Pritchard invented Pickleball in 1965, along with his friends Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. The game was first played on Joel’s backyard badminton court and was created to entertain their families and children during the summer. Eventually, the sport gained popularity among other families and communities in the Pacific Northwest, becoming a family-friendly activity enjoyed by all age ranges.

There are varying accounts on the origins of the name “Pickleball,” but one of the most popular is that the sport was named after Joel’s dog Pickles, who would chase after the ball and run with it. In 1967, the first pickleball court was created in the backyard of Joel’s friend, Bob O’Brian. The same year, Pickleball rules were formalized, with the first official tournament being held in Tukwila, Washington, in 1972.

In 1984, The USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) was established to promote the growth and development of the sport within the U.S. Today, Pickleball can be found in community centers, parks, schools, and dedicated courts internationally. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport experienced a significant surge in participation. This surge in participation has led to increased shipping demand for pickleball equipment.

Packaging Pickleball Equipment

When shipping Pickleball equipment, following proper packaging guidelines ensures a smooth delivery process. Some packaging materials needed include the following:

  • Cardboard Boxes
  • Bubble Wrap/Packing Paper
  • Packing Tape

Nets: When shipping pickleball nets, it is essential to understand your product’s dimensions and the courts’ standard size. The pickleball net is set 36 inches on the sidelines and 34 inches in the center as the standards. Another essential detail is the size of the courts; tennis courts are larger than pickleball courts. The dimensions for pickleball courts are usually 20 and 22 feet for singles.

Wrap poles and other net components individually with bubble wrap or foam padding. Then, place all wrapped components in a well-fitted, sturdy box. Ensure that the components are secure and will not shift during transit. Also, include any necessary tools or instructions for reassembling the net.

Paddles: Pickleball paddles follow the same general packaging and shipping guidelines as nets. Wrap each paddle individually with bubble wrap or foam padding to protect it from scratching and impact. Another step to consider is reinforcing the grips to prevent damage during transit. Then, place the paddles in a sturdy box with a snug fit to prevent additional movement. Next, fill any empty box spaces with packing peanuts or crumpled paper for additional cushioning.

Pickleballs: Pickleballs follow the same general packaging and shipping guidelines as nets. Place the balls in a small, secure container, like a plastic bag or small box. Then, ensure the container is tightly sealed to prevent the balls from falling out. If space is available, include the container in the same box as the paddles. If not, pack them separately.

Box selection:

For each item, choose an appropriately sized box that can endure the rigors of the shipping process. Reinforce the box with packing tape for security and protection. Fill any empty spaces with packing peanuts.

Labeling & Sealing: Label the boxes as “Fragile” or “Handle with Care” to signify the delicate contents to your carrier. Seal boxes securely with packing tape to prevent them from opening during transit.

If you have any questions regarding packaging or want a second opinion regarding your method, feel free to ask one of our expert freight agents. They will alert you of any specific packaging requirements or restrictions. It is also a great idea to consider purchasing shipping insurance in case of loss or damage. Our agents can help you find the best coverage for your shipments.
