What is Ocean Freight Shipping?

Ocean freight refers to goods transported via ocean vessels to destinations connected by sea. While all sorts of commodities can be shipped via ocean freighters, most are regular commodities shipped in a steel rectangular box called a shipping container, which is called containerization. About 90% of non-bulk cargo is shipped via containerization, allowing sea cargo companies to transport goods without touching them while increasing their safety. Two types of shippers utilize ocean freight: exporters and importers. Exporters deal with goods leaving their country of origin to a new destination (known as exports). At the same time, importers bring in items from overseas to ship to domestic destinations (known as imports).

No matter which type of ocean freight you’ll be doing, you must ensure your freight is properly packaged before loading it into containers. Because most ocean freight is destined for international ports, customs is essential to ocean freight shipping. Shippers must complete the customs paperwork correctly and follow all requirements for shipping to a specific country’s port. They will also need to prepare to store or distribute containers once they arrive at the port and pass through customs, as well as another mode of transportation to get containers from the port to their final destination.

Also, any specialized commodities shipped by ocean vessels should be adequately prepared for extended travel and unexpected weather. This includes fresh produce and frozen items, which must be a functioning cold chain vessel that can keep items from spoiling during transport. Bulk and oversized items must be strapped down properly and protected against environmental hazards, like severe weather and rough waters.
