Two types of shippers utilize ocean freight: exporters and importers. Exporters deal with goods leaving their country of origin to a new destination (known as exports). At the same time, importers bring in items from overseas to ship to domestic destinations (known as imports).

Because most ocean freight is destined for international ports, customs is essential to ocean freight shipping.
