Oversized and Wide Loads
Oversized and wide loads are loads that are too large to be hauled by a regular semi-truck. Learn more about what oversized and wide loads are and how FreightCenter can help get these loads delivered.
Oversized and Wide Loads
Freight shipping via truck ensures that goods and services arrive safely and punctually on a semi-truck while avoiding road hazards and braving severe weather conditions. But what happens when the goods in question are too big for a regular freight truck to transport?
When a shipment exceeds dimensional limits set by state regulations, it is considered an oversized or wide load. Despite these terms being used synonymously, these loads are different from each other. However, both types require careful planning and execution to transport them safely to their destinations.

What is an Oversized Load?
An oversized load is a freight that exceeds the capacity of a regular semi-truck and trailer. To qualify as an oversized load, at least one measurement (height, width, length, and weight) of your shipment must be over a state’s legal dimensional limit. For example, a load can exceed the state’s height limit but not exceed the width, length, or weight limits.
Each state has its own set limits on what loads count as being oversized. One state could say the maximum length limit is 48 feet, while another says it is 53 feet. Check your state’s Department of Transportation website or another organization dealing with oversized loads to see their maximum measurements.
The state also controls how to get the permits necessary for moving them. For example, the Florida Department of Transportation distributes permits through its Permit Office and controls who gets permits for how long.
Some examples of oversized loads include:
- Construction materials and equipment (steel beams, pipes, cranes, excavators, drills)
- Manufacturing and industrial equipment (assembly lines, conveyors, laser cutters)
- Agricultural equipment (tractors, cultivators, harrows)
- Automobiles (cars, trucks)
What is a Wide Load?
A wide load is a freight that exceeds the legal width limits for transportation. While a wide load is technically oversized, the reverse isn’t true. To be considered a wide load, only the width must exceed state regulations (usually about 8.5 ft.), as it would be considered an oversized load if the other dimensions were over state limits.
Wide loads have a special status over oversized loads (like tall loads or heavy hauls) because they take up space on the road. A typical highway lane is 12 feet long; a wide load blocks other lanes, which can cause traffic conditions to suffer.
Therefore, a truck carrying a 12 ft. wide shipment needs travel escorts, or pilot cars, to accompany them. Any load over 16 ft. wide requires roads to close and police escorts to follow the truck. These are called “super loads” and must be applied for with a state’s permit office.
Some examples of wide loads include:
- Mobile/prefabricated homes
- Boats, trucks, and planes
- Wind turbine parts
- Agricultural and construction equipment
Oversized vs. Wide Load
Again, wide loads are technically oversized loads, even if the opposite is false. However, both loads have differences that distinguish them from each other:
- Wide loads exceed the maximum width limit set by a state but don’t exceed other dimensions. Oversized loads exceed any of the four dimensions set by the state, including width, length, height, and weight.
- Wide loads must be transported on specialized equipment, such as a flatbed. Oversized loads that aren’t wide loads also may need specialized equipment, but some loads can utilize a standard semi-truck and trailer if they can fit (such as a load exceeding weight limits).
- Wide loads are approved by permits to be transported on specific routes. Oversized loads that aren’t wide loads can travel on any route as long as they follow other state regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Oversized and Wide Loads
Q. What is the difference between an oversized load and a wide load?
A wide load must exceed the maximum width limits set by a state; no other dimensions matter for a wide load. They also need to use specialized equipment for transport, such as a flatbed, and can only travel on specified routes.
Oversized loads, meanwhile, must exceed any maximum measurement (width, height, length, and weight) as set by the state. Depending on the load, they can use specialized equipment as well as standard trailers and travel any route they wish (as long as the width is below the maximum width limit).
Q. What qualifies as an oversized or wide load?
The dimensions of oversized and wide loads must exceed the maximum limits set by each state’s regulations. Every state’s rules on these loads vary, but typically, the maximum measurements to qualify as an oversized load include a maximum width of around 8.5 ft; a maximum height of around 8.5 ft; a maximum length of about 48 to 53 ft; and a maximum weight of about 40,000 to 46,000 lbs.
Q. What is a “super load”?
A super load is a wide load that exceeds the maximum width limits to the point of blocking off entire streets. A typical highway lane is about 12 feet wide, so any load that exceeds its width must have a travel escort accompanying it.
However, suppose the load exceeds beyond that (usually about 16 feet). In that case, it becomes a super load, which requires local authorities to close roads and have the load accompanied by a police escort. This keeps drivers safe and aware while warning truck drivers of potential hazards.
Q. What must a carrier do to prepare for an oversized and wide load delivery?
Carriers must obtain permits for transporting oversized freight and follow all safety regulations, including acquiring travel escorts (or coordinating a police escort if needed) and installing special markings like red flags, amber lights, and an “Oversize Load” sign to the front and back of the truck.
Carriers must also determine what days and times they can travel, as some states prohibit oversized load deliveries during major holidays, weekends, and weeknights. This includes every state the load is passing through, so carriers must evaluate the oversized load regulations of each state they will be traveling through.
