Oxnard’s Major Ports, Terminals, and Warehouses

The Oxnard Harbor District owns and operates the Port of Hueneme, located in the nearby city of Port Hueneme and 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The 40 ft deep harbor is the only deep-water harbor between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing in $2.8 billion annually. The Port was built by Oxnard Plain farmers who didn’t want to pay the expensive rail and truck rates to send their produce to Los Angeles for ocean freighting. Today, the Port of Hueneme is considered a diverse seaport specializing in container, breakbulk, general cargo, liquid bulk, automotive, fish, and produce shipping.

The Port of Hueneme has a 120-acre port-owned terminal and 34 acres it leases and shares with the Navy, along with 6 berths, 5 shore cranes, and rail connections to Union Pacific via the Oxnard Interchange and to a Class 3 rail line operated by Ventura County Railroad.  The Port is also a Foreign Trade Zone (#205) which defers, reduces or eliminates custom duties for businesses that utilize the port.

Oxnard Railroads

Union Pacific is the main Class 1 railroad operating in Oxnard. The Port of Hueneme offers near-dock freight rail services using a short-line railroad provided by the Ventura County Railway (operated by Genesee & Wyoming Railroad). The line is a 12-mile loop that runs from Port of Hueneme’s south end, around the city, and then ends at the north end of the port. The VCRR interchanges with Union Pacific at the northeast part of the loop, connecting the port with the rest of California.

The Port also has an 8-acre switchyard that holds 99 boxcars and 80 auto racks.

Oxnard Airports

Oxnard has one airport about a mile west of the downtown area, the Oxford Airport (OXR). The airport used to offer commercial flights; however, service ended after United Express ended flights to Los Angeles International Airport. Instead, the city of Oxnard relies on other major airports in the Greater Los Angeles area, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), and Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), all of which are mid-to-large-sized hubs for air cargo services.

Cost to Ship Freight to Oxnard

Several factors influence the cost when shipping to and from Oxnard. This includes:

  • Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Oxnard offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
  • Seasonal changes and demand: Oxnard’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
  • Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Oxnard include major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Portland, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
  • What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Oxnard matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
  • Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Oxnard’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.

Oxnard offers competitive rates due to its extensive network of freight carriers, proximity to key markets, and multiple transportation options. The city provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.

Why Choose Oxnard for Your Shipping Needs?

Shipping to and from Oxnard offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:

  • Proximity to Los Angeles and Long Beach Ports: Oxnard is part of the Greater Los Angeles area, meaning cargo from its ports makes its way through the city. Businesses can utilize the Port of Hueneme and trucking companies to secure domestic and international commodities right in town.
  • Rail and Truck Shipping: Oxnard is well regarded for its rail lines and major highways. Businesses can customize a shipping route using one or a combination of transportation modes to optimize their shipping experience and reduce transportation costs and delivery times.
  • Diverse Industries: Oxnard is home to many companies from multiple industries, all of whom utilize logistics services like warehousing, distribution, and more. Networking with local businesses in Oxnard can help connect new businesses with the logistics services they need.
