Modesto Freight Shipping
Modesto, California, is the 19th most populous city in the state, located in the Central Valley region about 68 miles south of Sacramento and 90 miles north of Fresno. The city is surrounded by farmland, and is a major contributor to California's agriculture. Modesto is also home to the Gallo Family Winery, the largest family-owned winery in the country, as well as the Rockabilly music genre by the Maddox Brothers and Rose.
The city's logistics and transportation industry is centered on the Beard Industrial District, a 2,000-acre piece of land that has over 9 million square feet of space for manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. The District is also home to the Modesto and Empire Traction Company, a shortline railroad that serves the companies leasing space and has connections with BNSF and Union Pacific. Aside from the Industrial District, the city also has major highways and freeways that connect Modesto to the rest of the Central Valley region, as well as to nearby airports in Merced and Stockton, the latter being the city's main air cargo service.

Modesto’s Major Ports, Terminals, and Warehouses
Modesto does not have a sea or inland port within its city limits. The city does have the Beard Industrial District, a 2,000-acre industrial park with over 9 million sq. ft. of industrial space. The land is owned by the Beard family, who also operate The Modesto and Empire Traction Company (MET), the city’s only shortline railroad. All companies that lease space through the District are also MET customers, allowing them to utilize the railroad’s transloading services.
Modesto Railroads
The city’s main railroad is Modesto and Empire Traction Company (MET), a Class 3 shortline railroad. It is owned by the Beard family, who also own and operate the Beard Industrial Park, where the MET is situated. The railroad’s main line is only five miles long but has an additional 48.7 miles of track within the District that serves the MET’s customers. The MET offers rail transloading services and interchanges with two Class 1 railroads: BNSF and Union Pacific.
Modesto Airports
The city’s primary airport is Modesto City-County Airport (MOD), a private airport with general and corporate aviation services. However, the airport does not support commercial flights. Instead, the city relies on two airports about 30 minutes away each: Merced Regional Airport (MCE), located south of Modesto, and Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK), located north of Modesto.
MCE and SCK have one passenger commercial airline (Advanced Air for MCE and Allegiant Air for SCK) that handles flights to Las Vegas and Los Angeles. SCK, however, handles air cargo through Amazon Air (operated by Atlas Air), with flights to four cities, including Ontario.
Cost to Ship Freight to Modesto
Several factors influence the cost when shipping to and from Modesto. This includes:
- Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Modesto offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
- Seasonal changes and demand: Modesto’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
- Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Modesto include major cities like Los Angeles, Long Beach, Las Vegas, and San Diego, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
- What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Modesto matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
- Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Modesto’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.
Modesto offers competitive rates due to its extensive network of freight carriers, proximity to key markets, and multiple transportation options. The city provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.
Why Choose Modesto for Your Shipping Needs?
Shipping to and from Modesto offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:
- Transloading Capabilities: Modesto’s Beard Industrial District offers transloading services to businesses leasing space, allowing them to reduce transportation costs and delivery times.
- Potential for Growth: Modesto isn’t particularly specialized in logistics or transportation, but that can benefit businesses looking to expand their warehousing and distribution operations without bumping shoulders with other businesses in more congested areas.
