Lubbock, Texas, is the 10th-most-populous city in the state. Located at the northwestern area of the state, it is home to Texas Tech University, the sixth-largest college by enrollment in Texas, and is one of the main employers in the city. One of the biggest cotton growers in the state, Lubbock has since expanded its economy to include sectors like technology, finance, energy, education, and healthcare. This, plus their proximity to other major cities like Dallas, Fort Worth, Ciudad Juárez, and Phoenix, makes Lubbock an attractive place for businesses.

The city's logistics and transportation industry mainly consists of its highways, airport, and railroads. The city is intersected by I-27, a major road that connects the city to major areas throughout Texas, along with other major freeways and streets. The Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport provides reliable and speedy transportation for air cargo as the 8th busiest airport in the state. The Lubbock Rail Port also offers rail services throughout the city, utilized by four railroads at interchange points, while the city's industrial park provides other opportunities to expand logistics and distribution operations.

Lubbock’s Major Ports, Terminals, and Warehouses

Lubbock has no traditional inland port since it is not close to the ocean or major rivers. Instead, Lubbock is supported by the nearby Lubbock Rail Port. The 526-acre land is located 5 miles north of Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport. BNSF Railway provides services to the rail port, with expansion plans in the works.

Aside from the rail port, the city of Lubbock also owns a business park, located one mile south of the Lubbock Airport. With about 586 acres of land, the park has major tenants, including Amazon, Verizon, Dura-Line, and Texas Tech University. The park also has open land available, for possible business development and expansion.

Both the rail port and business park have access to I-27.

Lubbock Railroads

Lubbock is served by three railroads:

  • Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF)
  • The Plainsman Switching Company (PSC)
  • The West Texas & Lubbock Railway (WTLC)

Union Pacific (UP) also has trackage rights, as per an agreement with BNSF, that include interchange points in two locations: one within the city limits between PSC and BNSF/UP and one in the heart of Lubbock between WTLC and BNSF/UP.

Lubbock Airports and Commercial Airlines

Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB) is the city’s primary airport. The 8th busiest airport in Texas, it only offers domestic flights throughout Southwest US, despite its name. Only three passenger and five cargo airlines offer flights in and out of Lubbock, including FedEx and UPS.

Cost to Ship Freight to Lubbock

Several factors influence the cost when shipping to and from Lubbock. This includes:

  • Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Lubbock offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
  • Seasonal changes and demand: Lubbock’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
  • Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Lubbock include major cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Dallas, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
  • What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Lubbock matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
  • Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Lubbock’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.

Lubbock offers competitive rates due to its extensive network of freight carriers, proximity to key markets, and multiple transportation options. The city provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.

Why Choose Lubbock for Your Shipping Needs?

Shipping to and from Lubbock offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:

  • Proximity to Major Cities: Lubbock’s metro area is in the middle of other major metropolitan areas, including Dallas, Phoenix, and Ciudad Juarez. Being close to these cities means taking advantage of their logistics and transportation facilities, as well as Lubbock’s offerings.
  • Rapid Development: Lubbock is experiencing a major jump in economic development due to major sectors like technology, finance, energy, and agriculture expanding their operations. The city’s rail port and industrial park are just a part of that development, with plans to expand their logistics operations.
  • Busy Airport: LBB Airport is a major hub for FedEx and UPS, which is why it is the 8th-busiest airport in the state. This has helped them become a reliable, safe place for businesses to ship freight via air cargo.
