Garland Freight Shipping
Garland, Texas, is the 13th-most-populous city in the state, and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, as it is located northeast outside Dallas. The city once focused on manufacturing cowboy hats and producing pickles during World War II, but today has expanded into the electronics, agriculture, and food/beverage industries. Companies who want to operate in Dallas without actually being in the crowded city have settled into Garland, including Kraft, Resistol Hats, and more.
Garland relies on Dallas's logistics and transportation industry for domestic and international trade. Dallas's two major airports, Dallas Love Airport and Dallas-Fort-Worth International Airport, handles air cargo from across the state and beyond. The city's major highways allow trucks to pass through on the way and from the Dallas area. While the city doesn't have an inland port, it does have one major Class 1 railroad that crosses through Garland, as does the historic Dallas, Garland, & Northeastern short line, operated by Genesee & Wyoming through an interchange deal with Union Pacific.

*Most of the imports and exports listed come from the state of Texas’s page on the Observatory of Economic Complexity website. Dairy products and hats are the only commodities exported directly from Garland.
Garland’s economic development began around World War II, when Kraft, Crabbock Foods, and Byer-Rolnick (now Resistol) established plants in the city to be close to Dallas. Today, the city’s economy has expanded to include electronics, manufacturing, and food and beverage industries. Because of its prosperous economy and its proximity to Dallas, companies have settled in Garland; Wingstop was founded in the city (it has since moved to Addison), and Resistol has become a significant cowboy hat manufacturer for major country stars.
Listed below are companies headquartered in Garland:
-
Resistol Hats manufactures and distributes cowboy hats and apparel for domestic and international markets.
-
Southern Maid Donuts operates a small chain of franchised donut shops in Southern and Western USA.
-
Arrow Fabricated Tubing manufactures aluminum fabricated tubing products, including manifolds and return bends/crossovers.
-
Epiroc Drilling Solutions LLC develops and manufactures mining and industrial products for mining and rock excavations.
These companies are crucial to driving the city’s economy, as most are involved in developing and distributing major imports and exports. As the city continues to embrace new infrastructures and industries, its status as a logistics powerhouse will also continue to rise.

The Dallas, Garland, & Northeastern Railroad, operated by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and owned by Union Pacific (UP), runs a short line through Garland. DFW is also the only one with an air cargo hub, handling over 790,000 total cargo tonnage annually.
Cost to Ship Freight to Garland
When shipping to and from Garland, several factors influence the cost. This includes:
- Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Garland offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
- Seasonal changes and demand: Garland’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
- Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Garland include major cities like New Orleans, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and St. Louis, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
- What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Garland matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
- Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Garland’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.
Garland offers competitive rates due to its extensive network of freight carriers, proximity to key markets, and multiple transportation options. The city provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.
Why Choose Garland for Your Shipping Needs?
Shipping to and from Garland offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:
- Busy Railroads: Garland’s two prominent, historic railroads operate right in the heart of the city, including DGNO’s transloading site just outside the city. Businesses creating an optimized shipping route can utilize the city’s railroads for multimodal and intermodal operations.
- Proximity to Dallas: Garland is a part of the Dallas metro area, located just northeast of the city. Companies wishing to expand their logistics operations into Dallas without finding room in the crowded city can find their own space in Garland instead.
