Fayetteville Freight Shipping

Fayetteville, North Carolina, is the 6th most populous city in the state. Located on the Camp Fear River, the city is known as the home of Fort Liberty, the largest military installation in the world with over 52,000 military personnel living within the compound. The fort is the city's biggest economic contributor, making around $4.5 billion a year through its retail and restaurants. The city is also involved in the healthcare, education, and hospitality sectors, making the city a comfortable place for businesses to make their home.

The city's logistics and transportation industry once contained the city's biggest inland port in the state. Several fires and the rapid urbanization of nearby cities have diminished the city's capabilities, but Fayetteville is still a major hub for freight rail transportation. With one Class 1 and two shortline railroads cutting through to the city's new transloading facility, businesses can move their freight faster than ever. The transloading facility is also adjacent to I-295, one of the many major highways and freeways that cut through the city. The city does rely on nearby cities for its air cargo and seaport trading, though the city's public use airport does have cargo shipping capabilities thanks to its two passenger airline services.

With a dedication to expanding its economic portfolio, Fayetteville is poised to be a diamond in the rough for logistics and transportation companies.

Before the turn of the 20th century, Fayetteville was a major inland port, but multiple fires and the rapid urbanization of surrounding cities ended the city’s role as a logistics hub. However, the city’s growth in the last few decades has spurned companies to make their way to the city to expand their operations. Today, Fayetteville relies on Fort Liberty as its leading economic contributor. The city is the largest retail hub in the region, with restaurants, shops, and entertainment places catering to the military personnel and their families. Other industries in Fayetteville include healthcare, hospitality, and education.

Listed below are companies headquartered in Fayetteville:

  • Larry’s Sausage Company produces sausage products and sells them to restaurants, food service chains, hospitals, military installations, and schools throughout North Carolina.

Fayetteville’s Major Ports, Terminals, and Warehouses

Fayetteville does not have a major sea or inland port within its city limits, though it used to back in the city’s earliest years. The closest port to the city is the Port of Wilmington, located at the endpoint of the Cape Fear River, 26 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Containing a container and general cargo terminal, the port has a 42 ft deep channel, 600,000 TEU capacity container terminal, 1 million sq. ft. of storage space, and seven container cranes. Intermodal rail services are provided by CSX Transportation, which is also connected to Fayetteville.

Fayetteville Railroads

The dominant Class 1 railroad in Fayetteville is CSX Transportation. Their “A Line” runs through the city, connecting to Fort Liberty. There is also the Raleigh and Fayetteville Railroad (operated by RJ Corman Railroad Group), a shortline that moves north from Fayetteville to Raleigh. The rail line has interchange points with CSX’s lines in Fayetteville. The Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad runs 47 miles from Aberdeen to Fayetteville and interchanges with CSX.

All lines serving Fayetteville are connected to a transloading facility via CSX’s rail line. The facility primarily delivers ethanol from Midwestern plants.

Fayetteville Airports and Commercial Airlines

The city’s primary airport is the Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY). It is a public-use airport that provides passenger flights from American Airlines and Delta Airlines. Both also ship cargo, but the airport has no major air cargo facilities beyond that. The closest airport with a central air cargo hub is Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), which ships air cargo from three airlines: FedEx, UPS, and Quest Diagnostics.

Cost to Ship Freight to Fayetteville

Several factors influence the cost of shipping to and from Fayetteville. This includes:

  • Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Fayetteville offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
  • Seasonal changes and demand: Fayetteville’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
  • Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Fayetteville include major cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, New York City, and Philadelphia, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
  • What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Fayetteville matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
  • Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Fayetteville’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.

Fayetteville offers competitive rates due to its extensive network of freight carriers, proximity to key markets, and multiple transportation options. The city provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.

Why Choose Fayetteville for Your Shipping Needs?

Shipping to and from Fayetteville offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:

  • Rail Options: With one Class 1 and two shortline railroads, Fayetteville is a major hub for freight rail transportation. The city’s transloading facility is excellent for businesses wanting to speed up the docking process and save time and money.
  • Room for Expansion: The city is well known for being a retail hotspot for the region, but there is still room for the logistics industry to grow in the city. Businesses wishing to expand their logistics operations could spread their wings in Fayetteville while having connections to nearby cities like Raleigh, Wilmington, and Charlotte.
