Easton Freight Shipping

Easton, Pennsylvania, is part of the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area alongside Allentown and Bethlehem. Easton shares a border with Philipsburg, New Jersey via the Lehigh and Delaware River's confluence and is a major historic relevance as one of the three public readings of the Declaration of Independence on July 8th, 1776. The city is also known as the first home of the Crayola Experience (originally the Crayola Factory), an interactive warehouse, museum, and store revolving around Crayola crayons that is near the Crayola headquarters in Forks Township.

The city's logistics and transportation industry was once reliant on rail transportation for freight shipping, as several lines were established in Easton. Today, however, only the Norfolk Southern Railway operates in the city via the Lehigh Line that runs through on its way to Bethlehem and Allentown. Trucks have replaced freight rail as the most popular mode of transportation in Easton, with several highways and tollways intersecting the city. The Lehigh Valley International Airport is also an important mode of transportation for freight, as it is a popular destination for e-commerce shipping thanks to the airport's relationship with parcel companies Amazon and FedEx. While not as bustling as it was back in its heyday, Easton is still an important logistics connector between eastern Pennsylvania and the rest of the East Coast.

Easton was a transportation and trading hub in the northeastern US back in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many rail lines travelled through Easton from Bethlehem and Allentown, delivering steel, coal, and iron to the rest of the region. However, the city declined after the emergence of the automobile and industries moving production overseas. Today, the city is mostly known for its retail, education, and tourism industries, particularly in children’s attractions. The biggest company in the greater Easton area is Crayola; though their headquarters is in the nearby Forks Township, the Crayola Experience attraction is located in downtown Easton.

Listed below are companies headquartered in Easton:

  • Majestic Athletic designs, manufactures, and markets licensed casual wear and sportswear for amateur and professional sports leagues. It was formerly the official on-field uniform manufacturer for the MLB from 2005 until 2019.

  • Victaulic manufactures and installs mechanical pipe joining systems for the engineering and construction industries.

  • Keystone Food Products develops and manufactures snacks including tortilla chips, party mixes, and corn snacks.

These companies are crucial to driving the city’s economy, as most are involved in developing and distributing major imports and exports.  As the city continues to embrace new infrastructures and industries, its status as a logistics powerhouse will also continue to rise.

Easton’s Major Ports, Terminals, and Warehouses

Easton does not have a major sea or inland port nearby. The closest port near Easton is the Port of Philadelphia, located about 90 minutes south, and the Ports of New York and New Jersey, located about 85 miles east.

Easton Railroads

Easton has one Class 3 railroad that crosses the city: the Lehigh Line, owned and operated by Norfolk Southern Railway. The city used to be a central hub for rail transportation, but now only the Norfolk Southern operates in Easton.  The line goes to Bethlehem and Allentown to the west and Phillisburg, NJ and the rest of the state to the east.

Easton Airports and Commercial Airlines

Easton has two airports near the city. The most prominent airport nearby is the Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), located 11 miles southwest of the city. The airport is the 4th busiest airport in Pennsylvania after Philedelphia, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg; it is heavily utilized for air cargo due to it being less congested than Newark International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport. ABE handled 275 million pounds of freight, most of it being for e-commerce. The airport has five cargo airlines using the airport, including Amazon Air and FedEx Express.

The only other airport nearby is Braden Airpark, which is a small public-use airport located three miles north of downtown Easton. This airport is for general aviation only, and does not offer commercial flights.

Cost to Ship Freight to Easton

Several factors influence the cost when shipping to and from Easton. This includes:

  • Type, size, and weight: Shipping heavy equipment, perishable goods, or specialized cargo will affect pricing. Easton offers a variety of shipping options, from standard LTL to temperature-controlled and expedited services, ensuring your freight arrives safely and securely.
  • Seasonal changes and demand: Easton’s rates fluctuate as much as the seasons change, especially during severe weather events or peak holiday shipping seasons.
  • Shipping distance: How far are you shipping your freight? The length between point A and point B will heavily determine your rate. Popular routes to and from Easton include major cities like Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, and Baltimore, where established rates can result in competitive rates.
  • What transportation mode is used: How you get your freight to and from Easton matters. LTL freight shipping via truck is much cheaper than air or rail shipping. However, it is also riskier and slower than those two, especially when your freight passes through multiple terminals throughout the city.
  • Accessorial Charges: Additional services, such as liftgate requirements, residential delivery, or limited access locations, can impact the final shipping price. Easton’s vast network of carriers ensures you can find a provider that offers the services you need at the right price.

Easton provides flexible and cost-effective solutions tailored to your needs, whether shipping less-than-truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), air cargo, intermodal cargo, or ocean and container drayage.

Why Choose Easton for Your Shipping Needs?

Shipping to and from Easton offers unique advantages other metropolitan areas with logistics hubs can’t offer:

  • Proximity to Major East Coast Cities: Easton is close to many of the significant metropolitan areas on the East Coast, including New York and Philadelphia. Companies wishing to expand their operations without moving to a congested metro area may find Easton to be a great city to operate in.
  • E-Commerce Shipping: The Lehigh Valley International Airport is responsible for delivering most e-commerce parcels and freight to customers within the East Coast. Due to this, online businesses may find relocating to Easton beneficial for their logistics operations.
  • Room to Grow: While the city has declined since its heyday in the 19th and 20th century, Easton is still a culturally relevant city in Eastern Pennsylvania, and has the potential to grow even further with investment from local and national companies.
