Measurements and Weight
The first thing you need to do when shipping a mattress is know all the proper measurements and dimensions. Accuracy is key, so no guesstimating! The more accurate your shipment details are on your freight quote, the less chance of a billing adjustment post-shipment. So, measure and weigh your mattress after it’s been fully packaged to a tee to make sure you’re getting the most accurate pricing. As a reference, here’s a chart showing the most standard mattress sizes and weights:
Mattress Size | Dimensions | Weight Range |
Twin | 38” x 75” | 40 – 55 lbs. |
Twin XL | 38” x 80” | 45 – 60 lbs. |
Full | 54” x 75” | 50 – 75 lbs. |
Queen | 60” x 80” | 60 – 110 lbs. |
King | 76” x 80” | 85 – 125 lbs. |
California King | 72” x 84” | 85 – 125 lbs. |
Again, never estimate or guesstimate. Be accurate when filling out a freight quote. Carriers always inspect cargo and check the details of the shipments they handle to make sure they can operate at full capacity. If what the carrier reports during inspection differs from what you reported during the quote process, you will receive a billing adjustment after the shipment is completed.
Packaging
Packaging your freight is always one of the most important steps in the shipping process. Mattresses are an interesting piece of cargo to package because of their shape and size. In fact, they are so interesting that they come with their own special boxes for moving! And there’s also a separate mattress protector that goes around the mattress before it goes into the box for added protection. If you’re including a box spring in the shipment, wrap the box spring with some external packaging material, such as bubble wrap. If there is any empty space in the box your mattress and box spring is in, fill the space with internal packaging materials, such as packing peanuts or packaging foam.
