Shipping Labels

A shipping label is an essential part of your freight shipment. Its purpose is to ensure your cargo is delivered to the right place.

You’ve seen it before; when a package arrives on your doorstep, the box or bag it’s in has a piece of paper taped with your and the sender’s addresses. That shipping label doubles as both a guide for the delivery driver to your location and as part of a tracking system that monitors your package’s location during transit.

Freight shipping is no different. You must place a shipping label on your freight shipment before pickup, as it tells the driver where your shipment is going, where it is from, how much it weighs, and what the tracking number is. There are also other labels you must put on the freight packaging, depending on how hazardous or fragile your shipment is.

Freight and shipping labels

Features of a Shipping Label

Shipping labels have different information depending on your carrier or broker. However, all shipping labels have the same three points of information:

  • The shipper’s name and address
  • The receiver’s (consignee’s) name and address
  • A barcode and tracking number

nbsp;

A shipping label for a freight shipment may also contain the following information:

  • The shipment’s dimensions (height and weight)
  • Insurance information
  • Special handling instructions, including if something is fragile or hazardous

All of this information helps carriers move freight where it’s supposed to go. The barcode is especially important, as it allows warehousing and terminal staff to view more details about your shipment, including what is inside it.

This may seem like a breach of privacy, but carriers need to know this information in case anything gets lost along the way or if there is a discrepancy between information written in the Bill of Lading (BOL) and what they find during the delivery. It also tells drivers and warehousing staff if something is heavy, fragile, or hazardous so they have the equipment to handle it properly.

Receiving and Affixing Your FreightCenter Shipping Label

Shortly after you’ve booked your shipment with FreightCenter, you will receive your paperwork via email. It includes your Bill of Lading, Terms and Conditions, and shipping labels. Yes, you don’t have to fill out the shipping label yourself like with UPS or FedEx; we fill them out for you!

In addition to the delivery address, the shipping label should include the shipper’s and the consignee’s names and phone numbers. If this information is not visible on the provided shipping label, add it.

Shipping labels need to be affixed to two adjoining sides of every distinct handling unit in your shipment. A handling unit is a physical unit containing packaging and its contents. If you have six boxes on one pallet, that is one handling unit. If you have two pallets with four boxes each, you have two handling units. Each crate is a handling unit. Place the labels near the top of the handling units so the driver can read the labels from the forklift.

Note that your shipping label does not include labels or stickers for hazardous, fragile, or heavy items. FreightCenter does not provide these labels; the customers must obtain them and place them on the unit. Packaging supply stores like ULine and Amazon have regulated/D.O.T. labels for hazardous materials freight and safe handling/warning labels for fragile and heavy items, so make sure they are also affixed to your freight before pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shipping Labels

Blind Shipping

Q. What's a shipping label?

A.

A shipping label is a piece of paper or sticker on a package containing the addresses of the sender and receiver, along with a tracking number and barcode. When sending it, you must affix it to a freight shipment so it can be delivered to the correct location.

Q. Why are shipping labels important?

A.

Shipping labels tell carriers where your shipment is going, who is sending the shipment, the dimensions of the contents inside, the tracking number and barcode, and other necessary information. Labels ensure shipments go to the correct destination and keep them from getting lost. They are also suitable for checking discrepancies between the shipment’s weight written on the BOL and the actual weight or any other issues carriers may encounter during deliveries.

Q. How do I get a shipping label for my shipment?

A.

Many carriers offer customizable shipping labels for their customers to fill out and print for their packages before pickup. While this may reduce potential incorrect labeling on the carrier’s part, it may not contain all the information carriers need. FreightCenter creates the shipping labels for our customers, which are provided along with other necessary documentation like the BOL. We fill them out while discussing your order, guaranteeing an accurate shipping label.

Q. What about hazardous or fragile shipping labels?

A.

The shipper must provide special handling labels for heavy, hazardous, or fragile shipments. The driver may not take your shipment if these labels are not placed on the package before the driver arrives for pickup. They can be found in packaging supply stores or on Amazon.
