Understanding Freight Weight Measurement

To grasp freight weight measurement, it’s essential to learn how less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carriers determine the weight of shipments. LTL freight is transported over long distances using large trucks, where importance is crucial in ensuring stability. Consequently, the relationship between space and shipping weight is more significant in LTL freight than smaller parcel trucks.

This relationship is quantified through a measurement known as density, which directly influences a shipment’s freight class. Freight class is a classification system that ensures fair pricing for shippers. The higher the shipment density, the lower the freight class, reducing shipping costs.

Weight is a key factor in determining freight class and is used in conjunction with other essential freight measurements. Understanding the relationship between weight, density, and freight class allows you to make informed decisions regarding your shipping costs.

How to Avoid Billing Adjustments Based on Shipping Weight

The incorrect reporting of shipping weight is the leading cause of billing adjustments in shipments handled by FreightCenter. Freight carriers meticulously weigh and inspect every shipment, which means any discrepancies between the weight stated on the Bill of Lading (BOL) or your LTL freight quote and the carrier’s measurement will result in a billing adjustment.

Understating the shipping weight can lead to unexpected costs. When the carrier identifies a discrepancy, they calculate the cost per pound and multiply the difference between the understated and correct weights by the price per pound. For instance, if your BOL states a shipping weight of 400 pounds with an invoiced amount of $800, and the carrier determines the actual weight to be 520 pounds, the billing adjustment would be calculated based on the 120-pound difference multiplied by the price per pound.

While a $240 adjustment for the corrected weight may not seem significant, it doesn’t end there. Additional fees for weighing the shipment, processing, and adjusting further increase the cost. Consequently, a simple $240 mistake can cost you over $400.
